War where the two principal parties do not fight each other. US and USSR never fought a direct war with each other. The "hot" war would have been hotter than any other conflict due to nuclear stockpiles on both sides. This conflict thankfully never took place, other wise many would have experienced a war with"hot' temperatures of 2,000 F from nuclear war. The two used proxy armies to fight each other. USSR used Vietnam and Cuba against US. The US returned the favor in Afghanistan.

*A* cold war (note lower-case letters) refers to hostitility between any two or more states or power blocs, hostility short of armed warfare. The period in Europe leading to the Great War could probably be referred to as a cold war.

cold war refers to the arm race between the USA and former USSR.After world war II , the world's superpowers were devided into two factions, one capitalists , with USA and other Socialists with USSR. Even landing man first on the moon was a facet of this war.
Disintegration of USSR was the final nail in the coffin of this war.
