My friend told me that theyre stored in some kind of cache somewhere and that she can read her staff members old conversations. I wouldnt be worried except that the other day my friend said something as a joke that would have been gross misconduct if it was misconstrued as my opinion popping up on my work monitor. I immediately blocked him and shut it down and sent him a stern email to never ever say anything like that to me via the net, especially not whilst I'm at work. Can people still find it?

Yes, but they'll also find your response to it. You reacted properly to protect your job, so don't worry.
Your mate must be aware that most companies track your pc use, so why would he send you a message like that at work?

In windows messenger there is an option to either save or not save your chat logs ...
Open your messenger . Goto Tools ..scroll down to Options ..Messages ..Tick or untick the box :)
Hope this helps !

Yeah, I had a friend that would send me links that looked legitimate, but it would send me to buttmagazine.com. Real nice at work! But yeah, your boss can monitor your work behavior on IM. Not only that, but at my recent workplace, an employee found a keystroke logger attached to his keyboard cable, so who knows who was monitoring what. Sounds illegal to me cuz he could record credit card entries and such.

yes you NEVER ever use instant messenger to discuss sensitive stuff, including talking about your boss.

On most company systems there is a clear warning telling you that it is not secure.

I think it gets recorded, unless you set it not to. All my conversations, I recently found, were stored in My Documents > My Received Files. You can delete them if you want.
