I used to work on a cross channel to France or Belgium from the UK they carry foot passengers, cars lorries and coaches. Now a lot of people use the Channel Tunnel from Cheriton/Folkestone in Kent for cars etc., or foot passengers go by Eurostar from London or Ashford

They are ships that carry cars, other vehicles and passengers across the English channel. They run out of Dover and you can book but you don't have to. Its a reasonably cheap way of getting to France. They also go from places like Newhaven, Portsmouth and Plymouth
