Back in the day people who could read and write were able to accomplish so much more and had a type of intelectual freedom, which others didn't. Can we make a similar comparison for today with the use of technology? Or are there more facets to this?

Absolutely. I wouldn't say it will ever replace literacy--notice how much more likely we are to give credence to answers that have few typos or spelling mistakes! Instead, it is expanding the old reading-and-writing literacy into something even more powerful.
