Of course. It is like talking over a cell phone, the messages have to reach the satellites before they reach your ear, it's the same thing with astronaut to NASA communications.

False - that's not what they're there for. Astronauts on the ISS can use communications satellites (they've got a system called Softphone) but the satellites are mainly for ground to ground communications.

Well, that's one of the possible functions. Original satellites were put in orbit to provide earth->satellite->earth transmissions. Typical uses were beaming TV images across oceans or carrying phone calls.

Fiber optic transmission, especially underseas has made most communications satellites prohibitively expensive.
