The main question is ..."How many years are wasted away on sleep?" ....the answer is none.
You need the sleep the body gains every night. Without it you die. Then you have wasted your entire future.
As to the second half of your question.
292,000 hours of sleep,or 12,167 days, or 406 months,or 33 to 34 years.
Considering you get sixty six years of life out of that, I would say it's a bargain.

I don't consider sleep a waste. I love sleep! I never get enough! I consider my time at work a waste! I remember hearing a statistic once about how much time we waste waiting (in line at the grocery store or stuck in traffic or at the doctor's office) in a lifetime & it was depressing. Yes we waste many hours each day doing things that are unpleasant or that we hate. The point is to focus on the good times. On the moments that aren't a waste. On the great memories that we create. The times that are worthwhile, that we enjoy, that make us happy. They are what really matters. If I have a hellish 12 hours at work but I enjoy 2 hours at home with someone I love or I spend half an hour & write a song or a few hours & do a painting that expresses my feelings & that will live on forever, then it's still a good day!

Sleep is a necessity. We need it to recharge our bodies & minds. It can be very rewarding. Too many people don't get enough rest & it makes them ill. Sleep deprivation takes a toll on your mental & physical health. It is not a waste! Look at cats. They sleep most of the day. But they have a beautiful life. It is certainly not a waste.

I'll answer a different question: How much of one's life is spent sleeping? Ideally, about one third of someone's lifetime is spent asleep, more for children. You can actually survive longer without food (about two weeks on average) than without sleep (about 10 days).

Sleep is not wasted. The brain is active during sleep, but it is a different kind of activity. It resets itself, re-balances neurotransmitters, cleans up, files away, and processes stimuli, etc. There is also evidence that the brain can create, intuit, warn, learn, and do many other, less definable activities during sleeping hours. The body is also active, healing, growing, resting. Some suggest that babies sleep more because their bodies are so busy growing that the enormous energy required for consciousness just can't be spared.

In short the body's sleeptime processes are necessary or useful to make waking hours more productive. Just try it without!

Your calculations may show any result. But, nearly half of our life is sleeping. You may call it a waste. It may not be considered a waste, because, it is natural. It may be essential for the revival of the body system.
Half of our life is wake. You don't know, actual useful working hours may be very less. So, it is better to consider that you have one day life. Because you don't know the future, past has gone and cannot come again. Hence, you always have only one day at your disposal. In other words, man has to live according to single day life program.

No matter how old they are, it'll be 1/3 of their life, since 8 hours is 1/3 of the day.

Lol, i don't agree you use the word wasted. If we don't get sleep how will we have energy to work the next day?

not enough. sleep is the best thing that's ever happened to me. shame on you for asking. we don't waste years on sleeping. we gain them. imagine what you would look like if you never slept. would you look at yourself in the mirror? sleep well.

i will star your question because i answered it. so obviously i find it interesting.
