If you have a CD player, check out the Great Lectures series from the Teaching Company. They feature college level material in lectures of 30 to 45 minutes, 12 to 48 lectures per course. My daily commute is 50 minutes, and the trip is perfect for listening to one lecture each way. The lectures are given by many of the finest educators in the country, and cover almost any subject you can think of....in the past year I have gone through subjects like particle physics for non-scientists, the Early Middle Ages in Europe, an in depth examination of the Arthurian Legends, and the Symphonies of Beethoven. The lecturers do an excellent job of making the material comprehensible and interesting to regular people like us. They should be available through your local library. Hope this helps.

I found reading is an excellent way to shorten a commute. Light reading by some excellent mystery writers. i.e., Reginald Hill, Gill McGown.

If it is short commute, or I know I will be standing in a boring line (grocery store or bank) doing crossword puzzels is a good pastime. Makes your brain think in different ways, doesn't bother me to tuck it away when it is finally my turn at the cue.

Cheers.

Perhaps meditate. It will centre and calm you for your day.

OR

When riding the subway, I would look at fellow passengers, and create a whole life story about them. It was a wonderful exercise in imagination. And also encouraged reading the faces of people. Of course I don't know how close to the truth my ideas were but It did make me more aware of the individuals - not just faceless automatons.

well, u've asked u'r question in the right place. sociology is the study of human behavior in different settings. its the most interesting work to do so just indulge u'r self in the pursuit of better understanding of social beings. observe the interactions and u'll never know the time passing away.

just c how we already have a set of rules and go by them wihout the need for introductions every day, how we know the responses to social stimuli,

observe and u'll know much more........
