It works for me!....I use a technique called visualization. All top athletes use it to improve thier performance..it involves "walking" through a set of actions or a specific emotional response in your mind and then practicing it until it becomes second nature...do the same for happiness...think about being happy in a specific situation...try it a few times and when the real event happens you will be better prepared...does'nt work all the time...but it's better than being sad....

From your question, it may be inferred that you want to become happy in reality, not in a pretending way. Therefore, pretending to be happy, like appearing happy in public wont make you "really" happy, instead, it will just overshadow reality like a drug. Instead, happiness needs to be found in the "reality." To do so, you need to have a positive outlook on things, have a balanced life, and get lots of support from loved ones. The "happiest" state according to Buddhism, is to reach what is called enlightenment, or Nirvana.
With all the different possibilities, be sceptical of the different techniques, which many experts claim can have greatly negative impacts.

Actually yes! There are various mechanisms in the body that do this. If you smile, even if it is a pretend smile, your body produces endorphins, hormones that give a feel-good buzz. If you laugh, even a faked laugh, the body does the same. Watching a funny movie or having a joke with friends will improve your well being even if it doesn't change any circumstances. Laughter therapy is used in some ground breaking clinics for depression and anxiety.

to pretend to be happy will not make you happy. it will only make you more miserable than before. the best way to be happy is to find out the things that can satisfy your desires (like picking flowers, watching a movie with friends, etc) and you can work on your happiness from there.

It's a bit more complex than that but basically it is a good start. Put a smile on your face and 'act as if' and slowly you will start to feel like that. (It's based on a theory caledd the 'facial feedback hypothesis' )
