The cross section of a cone is a circle, if the cut is made perpendicular to the axis of the cone.

If the cut is made at a slight angle, the cross section is an ellipse. If it's made parallel to the angle of the cone, the cross section is an parabola. If it's cut at a still steeper angle, the cross section is a hyperbola.

If you cut a cone with a plane perpendicular to its height you´ll get a circle .
If the plane cuts all generatixes it would be an ellpse
If the plane is paralel to one genratrix it is a parabole
If it is not paralel and does not cut all generatrixe it would be one branch of a hyperbole
