Thinking "out of the box" isn't necessarily "positive" thinking.

It means that person doesn't limit his thinking or solutions to problems to the way things are done already or have always been done. Sometimes people will have a problem and look at the immediate situation/policies that "surround" that problem and try to figure out how to solve it while operating within the constraints of how things already are done. An out-of-the-box thinker will let his mind go a little wild and imagine what could be done even if it is something nobody has already done or something that is pretty unconventional.

To think out of the box I think people need to have a lot of ideas or the ability to look at the big picture and come up with a lot of ideas, and they need to be confident enough with their ideas to screen how realistic they are with objectivity and then share them as possible solutions.

The expression refers to original thinking/creative thinking to provide novel solutions to problems, NOT positive thinking: they are not at all the same.

PS; I think 'the box' refers to a Skinner Box.

start out simple...when you catch yourself thinking negative..change your thoughts to something positive that could happen or something else positive in your life. it's all about thinking and attitude change!
