I've been in college for the past 6 years. I told my parents a year ago that I was graduating this may '07. If I had passed all my classes this past year, I would be graduating this semester, but I failed a lot of them. They have no idea about this & I don't plan on telling them that. I'm going to say it was a mix up with how many classes I had left or something. I plan to pay for my last year myself, but I know my parents will be hurt because they have put in so much money for my education. How do I tell them & what excuses should I use other than I was just plain lazy & stupid.

'Fess up. It will only get worse if you delay. Tell them that you are going to pay for your own way from this point on. Show some maturity. Thank them for putting you through so far and tell them that you realize they must be disappointed. You are ashamed and will try to make it right. That will be a lot easier in the long run than having them go back to all their relatives and explain why they have to send back the graduation cards.

You might also check and see if you can graduate with a concentration and two minors. I burned out my last semester and was one class shy of a major, but I talked to the dean and found I could graduate with a concentration and two minors, which I had.

Show initiative as well in the planning. "I can work this summer and make enough to finish next fall..."

First of all you are not stupid! Second just tell them the truth evethough you might hurt them. Tell them tou had a hard time because you were to over loaded and stressed and probably did not get much sleep and so you do not want to waste their money so you decided to stop going to college for now and may possibly even pick it up later in life. Also tell them that you are going to pay for the last year yourself. By telling them this it will ease some tension for you and them because it shows you are responsible. If you lie to them they will find out eventually and it will devistate them and you will loose their trust. They love you and always will no matter what happens.

I suggest that you tell your parents the truth and find a way to retake the courses. I am sure they did not want to throw money away but have had your best interest in mind and I think that the lowest thing you can do as a "thank you" is to lie to them. Tell them.

After six years they must already know that you are lazy and unmotivated. At this point, you must be what 24 or so? Rhetorical. Time for you to come clean with your parents and grow up. I question your parent's sanity too, as to why they would put out six years worth of money for your education when it is obviousl you are extremely immature. If I were them, your bags would be on the front stoop. Apparently you have access to a computer as you posted this. They must have financed that too. They need to learn a thing or two about how NOT to be doormats. Time for everyone in your group to come clean, grow up, and get real.

I think that you should tell them the truth, believe me they will get upset just as you are upset but that would only be initially, they love you and they'll understand you and support you. i have failed my parents a lot, there were times i hid things from them, but eventually they found out about it, and after so many mistakes in my life.. ive learned.. they were the one's who were really there for me. and i ask myself? who else should i trust? they will initially be upset or even scold you for failing but they will understand if you just show them you're sorry and you'll work on.. even if you don't show them you're sorry actually.. parents will be parents.. they will hug you and tell you it's okay..

The best idea, is to tell them. Just sit down with your mum and act all sympathetic! My cousin had to do that and his dad was fine!!
