The highest-paid job I ever had was as a graphic artist at a newspaper. Very competitive, though. Kind of soul-sucking.
I have a friend in Scotland who worked as a graphic artist in a company until he decided it was time to strike out on his own and start his own business. He is very talented, and he seems to be doing well.
Part of the talent is going to be having a natural eye. Part of it will be training in the latest trends, and making sure you have the same visual taste as the bosses where you are trying to go. And whether it's bosses you are trying to please or clients, you do need good interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to learn from criticism and use it to make your own work better.

There really aren't many career options in graphic arts unless your extremely talented. Now if you want to minor in it while getting a business degree that makes you stand out more than your dull business major.

It's a great career choice if you stick with it and really enjoy it. Is this everything you want to do?
