Real guy, born William H. Bonney.

He was young, and a writer gave him that sobriquet, "the Kid."
>>"On December 3, 1880, William Bonney is mentioned for the first time as "Billy the Kid" in J.H. Koogler's article in the Las Vegas Gazette: "There's a powerful gang of outlaws harassing the stockmen of the Pecos and Panhandle country, and terrorizing the people of Fort Sumner and vicinity. The gang includes forty or fifty men, all hard characters, the offscourings of society, fugitives from justice, and desperadoes by profession....the gang is under the leadership of 'Billy the Kid,' a desperate cuss, who is eligible for the post of captain of any crowd, no matter how mean or lawless." Not only did Koogler continue to exaggerate the Kid's outlaw activities and build up a badman reputation that he didn't deserve, but Koogler may have been the one responsible for the name Billy the Kid would be so famously known as."

Nobody knows his age, because they don't know his birth year for sure. But they suppose he was 21. (He could have been anywhere from 19-21.)

Here is his headstone inscription:
BILLY THE KID
Born Nov 23 1860 Killed Jul 14, 1881
THE BOY BANDIT KING HE DIED AS HE HAD LIVED

Pat Garrett shot him while he lay sleeping, more than likely, although his story is that Billy was armed with a gun and a knife when Garrett entered the room. This is another incident where the winner gets to write the history.

Henry McCarty (November 23, 1859– July 14, 1881) better known as Billy the Kid, but also known by the aliases Henry Antrim and William Harrison Bonney, was a 19th century American frontier outlaw and gunman who was a participant in the Lincoln County War. He was reputed to have killed 21 men, one for each year of his life, but the actual total is probably closer to nine (four on his own and five with the help of others).McCarty was catapulted into legend in the year after his death when his killer, Sheriff Patrick Garrett, published a wildly sensationalistic biography of the outlaw called The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid. Beginning with Garrett's self-serving account, Billy the Kid would grow into perhaps the most famous and symbolic figure of the American Old West.

Billy the Kid was a real person, but if you watch movies about Billy the Kid, then they portray a lot of false information. Which he was an out law, factual, there was more to the story than that.
It has to do with government corruption and things of that nature, and you need to keep in mind, that the law enforecement was not like they are now, corrupt officials, without a fair judicial system like we have now. But the truth is, none of that can ever really be proven by convential means, but yes, he was a real person.

For all those saying "FAKE, penguins can't fly", it was a plane he flew, this is also how the guy knew the penguin was called Morgan as it said on his pilots license and it was on the side of the plane. The penguin also gave the guy some brown liquid to heat him up, the guy then distributed it round the world as "Captain Morgans". The fact that he could fly a plane is the reason why Morgan was at the North Pole in the first place as well. :P
