I say thank for the gift. Then I use it for a short period of time, until it gets "Lost or Broken". Or if it is something I can re-gift, without anybody noticing, I pass it on.

To Show that you are a good person, you accept the gift. Time, efford, money & thought was put in to getting you this gift and it would be very unthoughtfull and rude if you didn't show that you are greatfull for this gift.
Send a thank you card to show this person you really are greatfull for the gift and then exchange the gift for something else - if you can, or give it as a gift to someone else - someone who will like the gift. Or you can donate the gift to a shelter or somone who will really appreciate it. This way you keep everybody happy and you've done a good deed. If it comes out that you have given away the gift - you can say with a good heart that it was given to someone who really needed it more than you, and the person who gave you the gift will understand.

Accept it graciously and say thank you for the present because the person who give it to you spends time thinking and had a hard time looking for the kind of present to give you. You may re-gift it or give it to someone close to you.

I would return it if I had the gift receipt, otherwise I would find someone else who needed that and offered it to them. Oh, but never let that someone know that you didn't like it, its rude, and if I bought someone something I would not care what you did with it, as long as you didn't tell me you hated it when you got it...
Here is an example. I got a gift certificate from my neighbor for Christmas. We went to Marie Calendar's and ate dinner and used our gift card, only the card wasn't what our neighbors said it was for, much less. We never said anything to our neighbors about this since they gave us $$ that much money off of our bill. Granted, that was not what we had anticipated, or had wanted, but we were thankful that they gave us that at all.
Here is the point,,,,,a gift is a gift and you would not have it unless it wasn't a gift. What you do with it is up to you after you have received it. Please don't ask the person to return it or anything else, that person has given, what you do is up to you.

well if you really care about the person who gave you this gift, then you should probably find some use for it, even if we dont like the gift or not i bet it came from the heart and that should be all that matters right. sometimes i may not have enough money to buy a really great gift, but when i do, i can make a good gift by adding different little things to it that i can make myself, you get my idea.

Think of the present not as what the item actually is, but as a present. You now have a gift for somebody else.

Depends on who it is and how long I've known them. If it's a new boyfriend, I put that ugly thing on right then with a sly smile. The smile is so that once we get to know each other better and I tell him that I didn't care for the gift, he can recall the strange smile and know there was some esoteric honesty there.
People I'm comfortable with I tell them what I feel.

Just send them a "thank you" card and say that was nice of them to get you a present. If you know of someone who would like it, then give it to them.
Or if they give it to you in person, tell them thank you for being so kind, that was nice of you. Give them a hug too! Then, give it to someone you know that may like it.
Remember, it was the thought that counts is why they gave the present to you. (smile)

Accept it gracefully, and appreciatively. You don't want to hurt their feelings, after all, no one HAS to buy anyone else a gift at all.
THEN LATER, if you think they wont mind, return it...or better yet, hold on to it for a couple years, just put it in the back of your closet, and re-gift it to someone who actually might like it. Just make sure you don't accidentally re-gift it back to the person who bought it for you, lol.

Accept it... it can always be turn over to someone else who you might think will like the gift. Otherwise you might make the person feel unease. Safe friendship is always accept, but just don't jump over the cliff if they ask you. Just a figure of speech!
