1. biggest one of all!!! COMMUNICATION!!!! a good defensive player will help call a pick or a switch.
2. listen to your teammates, and when assigned to defend (if playing man) find your man as soon as possible. if you lose your man they'll score on you everytime.
3. stay with your man on Defense if playing one on one, and if you're having trouble keeping up, switch players with another defender.
4. keep your head up at all times, pay attention to your surroundings. ie. don't run into a pick
5. anticipation (hardest skill to learn,. comes with time)
6. challenge the shot (hands up Defense) it'll change the shot of the offensive player. but TRY not to foul when doing this.
7. keep your feet moving, except when trying to take a charge
8. dont EVER take a dive, that's just poor defensive play and poor sportsmanship and you'll never get the call, but rather proabably be BOOED off the court.
9. BOX OUT the offensive player and try for rebounds, and when rebounding try to get 2 hands on the ball.
10. Ususally double teaming isnt needed, depends on calibur of play. so i wont even go there.....
11. If a player is trying for a lay-up, remember hands up, and try as much as you can to stay with the ball, bcuz if you swat your hands on any part of the offensive players body, it'll be called a foul.
12. if you're a point/shooting guard. try to keep up with your man, stay low to the ground if defending another point/shooting guard.
if you're a Forward or Center, and playing down in the blocks keep your hands up, and dont be pushed around by the offensive player.

if playing ZONE, be sure to learn Zone defense and do not get it confused with Man to Man defense. And on Zone, if you leave your spot, make sure that your team mates know so they can help spread the Defense. and help out when needed.

but even on zone, the same skills are needed.

theres a lot more to learning defensive fundamentals. but hope this helps. and remember practice
Well good luck to ya!
