You can NOT put a 65 watt lamp (bulb) in a luminaire (light) that is rated for 60 watts max. This will eventually start a fire.

This is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners consistently make. The higher wattage lamp will also put out more heat. This additional heat causes the insulation on the wire to break down and become very brittle. After a while, the insulation falls off and the conductors (wires) short together.

The lamp socket fixture is designed to work with a max @ 60W. When you exceeded the rated listing you run the risk of a fire. As the lamp was not designed to handle the extra wattage, Sure you can run a larger bulb in a lamp in a pinch. But I would not keep it in long term.

I'd like to make a suggestion; instead of a regular incandescent bulb, put in one that's got better illumination at less wattage use and less heat..they're called a "CFL" or Compact Flourescent Lamp. You can see an example of one at the below link, and read about the advantages of them.

hmmm.. i think the 65w bulb wouldn't light up in a 60w bulb slot
if you put something lower than 60w, then that bulb would definitely fry up

I think you'll be fine; they just don't want you putting in something that will be a LOT bigger and thus generate a LOT more heat - like 100 or 150 watts.

Worst case scenario it will explode and/or cause a fire, but usually they just blow really easily and you'll have to replace it within a week or so anyway.
