Its called an I.P. number. Its not unlike a snail mail address. Every PC on the internet worldwide is assigned an I.P. address and no other PC will have it. It will be specific to your PC.

The standard version now is IPv4 which allows for 256^4 or roughly 4 billion distinct address, not some are used for routing purposes. Various tricks can be done to route packages from internal networks to external networks, in which case an external source will see everything for a given internal network comming from the same IP address.

There is a push to move to IPv6, which allows 256^6 distinct addresses, which would allow roughly 280 million million unique addresses.

Every computer connected to internet, has unique IP address.

The IP address is in form of A.B.C.D or A.B.C.D.E.F (depending on whether we are talking of IPv4 or IPv6). Each part (A,B,C,D,E,F) are numeric, starting from 1 ending with 255, 0 being reserved for special purpose.

Since IP addresses are not easy to remember, a concept of host name is used. These are user friendly name given to computer, so that client can specify name instead of IP address of machine they wish to connect. It's easy to remember www.yahoo.com then remembering IP address (like 203.69.112.98 (fictious)).
There are DNS (domain name servers) who help you to convert user friendly name into IP address.

Your computer is identified on the internet by an IP address assigned by your internet provider, eg 101.0.0.1. Normally, the IP address will change every time you go online unless you have purchased a static IP address which never changes.

Addresses are assigned to ISP companies in big groups. Then an ISP company assigns IP addresses to its customers, either in smaller groups or one by one.

Inside of a network, most computers have their addresses assigned by a DHCP server. Such servers are set up and run by a network administrator who works for the company that owns the computers.
