I understand the non-smoking point of view and I am polite, etc. but I think it is absurd that you cannot smoke outside at a cafe in New York.I think it is absurd that you cannot smoke at a bar where there is no restaurant attatched.Funny how alchohol, which kills more people than cigarettes isn't getting a bad rap.No one ever killed a family of four in a car by smoking. And don't give me the second hand smoke crap.We breathe in a lot worse than cig. smoke!
Damn-we are back to the prohibition days.I want to have my own smoking lounge but it is illegal to smoke even in a private club.Give me a break!

I also understand the non-smoker point of view about how we are 'poisoning' them, etc. but I agree that there should be at least a few private clubs which allow smoking. There should be a smoking 'bar' where you can sit around and smoke inside. They don't even need to serve alcohol, it can be a cigarette bar. I suppose the issue with it is that people freak out because they want 'equality' and a non-smoker would want the right to work in a place that allows smoking. If they worked in a place that allowed smoking, they would complain that they are breathing in second hand smoke. That's one of the reasons for the smoking ban in the first place. It's to 'protect' the employees. It would be discrimination if a smoking lounge/bar were to refuse non-smokers a job. Because of those few whiny people, smokers cannot have a 'cigarette bar'. It's annoying as hell since I don't understand what the big deal is. If you don't want to be around smoke, don't go into the one or two places that should allow smoking. It makes just as much sense as someone who has a peanut allergy wanting to eat at a restaurant which only serves peanut butter and then demanding that they change the menu.

I'm ok with the 'no smoking at outside cafe tables' because I understand that the smoke does blow over to the possible non-smoker sitting at the next table. I'm ok with smoking being banned from public places BUT I think there should be a couple of 'private' places in the city which are dedicated to smoking since it's not illegal.

Looks like we'll need to start private clubs in our own homes. :)

I'm from New York originally. My brother still lives there and was really fuming when he found out that he could not smoke in the very expensive season box seats at Yankee Stadium. We were shocked, on a visit back, that there was no smoking allowed outdoors at the Bronx Zoo. This with the bars is ludicrious! If it's the employees they're worried about, those employees still worked there when smoking was allowed.

We have some "no smoking in public" law in Arizona starting May 1st. So, we need to go hide in back alleys like heroin addicts?

The government is being extremely hypocritical--they don't really want people to quit--they would lose hundreds of billions in tax dollars every year. They know if people are going to smoke, they are going to smoke. Many of the people here are doing things a lot more illegal than smoking cigarettes--and they're not paying taxes.

I'll think of your question when I go to my fathers grave this weekend,he was a smoker.
So in protest all the smokers could buy up the land in the graveyards.

If all the smokers stopped smoking the govt. would have to raise taxes on the non-smokers.

Stop trying to poison the rest of us. Promise not to send me to the hospital with an asthma attack. Then you'll be invited back to join the rest of us again.
