Tara:
There are many publishers out there and believe me, it is hard to find one. I spent two years and many, many manuscripts sent with only three replies to the negative. One took three years to reply? Just type in (Canadian) USA Literary Agency's and try some of these.
I went the self publish route. Very hard row to hoe. It worked for me only because I am retired and had time to do many book signings.
I write this mainly to warn you about the bad guys out there trying to take your money for nothing. Check (Warning &Cautions for Writers) May save you some headaches.

Go to the library. Check out every book on self-editing. Go over your book with a fine-tooth comb. Publishing is a tough business, and Chick Lit is a glut on the market, so you need your manuscript to shine like a diamond in the sun.

Once you've done that, go back to the library. Market list books are in the reference section. Start sending out copies. Be prepared to spend years trying to find a home for your first book.

Good luck to you.

I guess after writing your novel you could prepare your manuscript. Basic rule for manuscript preparation: typed, double-spaced, standard 8.5" x 11" white paper, on one side only. Do extra research on how to prepare a manuscript. It would be good to get an agent. In choosing an agent you identify people who are only after your checks, the advertising sharks, the ones who rub elbows with publishers but that's about all they'll do. They will not sell your manuscript (book). They are NOT the ones you like to have to represent you. Find a reputable representative who will sell your manuscript to a publishing firm. He makes money from the percentage of sales. He will deal with rejection slips which can be unpleasant sometimes . You could also research on writer's markets, where you can go to sell your novel.

Tips or advice for what? You read a book, great. Read another. Try a different kind next time, to broaden your horizons.
