They were three of the earliest pioneers of photography. Fox-Talbot, an Englishman, invented the developing, fixing and printing system which was the foundation of all photography until the advent of digital. Niepce had been able to take photographs before him using bitumen and Daguerre had produced 'daguerrotypes' which used silver coated metal plates. The difficulty which both these processes was that the pictures taken were unique - i.e., further copies could not be made as they could with the paper/negative system invented by Fox-Talbot.
