A sherriff is a locally elected law officer.A marshall is an officer of the federal government hence they are called US.Marshal.The sherriff is like an ordinary police officer dealing with the same things.US marshalls transport Federal prisonors and act as the governments police,The FBI are thought to be Federal police but they are not and make that clear on their site.
