can any program continue running when computer is in stand by mode?

No. Standby is similar to hibernation. Hibernation saves your current configuration so that it restarts where it left off when you turn the computer back on. Standby, freezes the computers operation in suspended animation (so to speek) so that nothing shuts down but yet nothing operates. when you bring it out of standby mode, it will appear as though nothing shut down because it is continuing where it left off automatically.

run some then go too standby mode then come out of that and see what is still running
