They used to recommend starting with rice cereal, but new research shows that's not a good idea. It's teaching bad eating habits, and setting them up for possible weight problems, because it's high calorie with the wrong kinds of carbohydrates, and not much good for them in it. The only reason they used to recommend it is b/c there's little chance of being allergic to it. Personally, I would consider seeing another pediatrician. He sounds awfully pushy. A child should be allowed to do things at their own pace. She's just barely past the time they recommend beginning solids (6 months) and maybe she's just not interested yet. Is she breast feeding still ? If she is, lots of breastfed babies start solids later b/c they're still satisfied with what they're getting since breastmilk changes in makeup as baby gets older. When she starts looking at your food like she wants it, starts acting very hungry between nursing or bottle feedings, then she's ready to start with some veggies or fruits. A great one to start with is squash. All babies seem to like squash! There's evidence pointing to the possibility that th elonger they wait to start solids, the fewer allergies they have, and the less likely to be obese they are. Look around at all us BIG people! We were the generations raised with the belief of putting rice in bottles (LOADS of calories, numbs the stomachs 'full' signals) and eating solids at 3 months.

There's a great chart at askdrsears.com (see below) for feeding tips. Baby knows what she needs. Sometime between 4 and 7 months, their intestines just finish forming enough to handle solids well.

Firstly, get yourself a hand held blender, about £12, sometimes called soup makers, available from the likes of Argos and Robert Dyas. Then just get cooking and mushing, you can cook her vegetables, meat, rice anything and mash it all up so it looks like jar food, my baby loved it. My cousin also has a neat little trick, when she has made a load of mush, she gets an ice cube tray and puts the leftovers in them to freeze. Then she can just take 3 or 4 cubes out and reheat in the microwave for a quick meal or when she and baby are out visiting. Really, though, the blender is great, and is always handy to have around when baby has got her teeth into something more solid. It is also a good way to introduce some basic mild herbs and spices. It is much much cheaper than buying food and you know exactly what you are feeding your baby without all the sugar/salt/e-number fiasco going on.

Start with vegetables. No meat flavors. Plain sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, corn. And your doctor is definitely right about the fruits later. If the baby gets a taste of the fruits first she will not want to eat the vegetables. Get her to eating vegetables for two weeks at least before introducing the fruits. Just keep trying your baby has to adjust to the flavor and texture of the food.

Babies all tend to be different just like adults and children. I have three and none of them liked or started foods at the same time. I would recommend just continue to try different things with her. My second child would not eat baby food, so I gave him table food. I would buy the no sodium added canned veggies, put them in a blender and blend them up and feed them to him. I also made mashed potatoes and took out a small bit for him before adding any spices like salt or pepper. You can do this with fruits aswell, bananas are a good choice, just smash them up and most babies like them. Hope this helps.

Don't give your child meat until she is at least 8 months old, their little tummies can't handle it. Start with veggies. I started my daughter on yams and sweet potatoes. The first time we tryed carrots and string beans she didnt' like then at all now she will eat them. I started with yams and sweet potatoes cause they mix especially well with other foods like spinach, which my daughter will eat.
I make all of my baby food, its pretty easy most of it goes in the oven then you stick it in the fridge for a bit to cool and put it in a blender with water.
You should be giving her food 2x a day when starting foods, once you find something she'll eat continue for about 5 days.
Amazon has a blender baby food wtih 125 recipes I recommend that if you are going to make your own stuff.

Definitely cereal first. It's much easier on you and baby. The texture is easy to adjust. Too thick or too thin and baby will let you know. Veggies and fruits can wait until 8 months or even later. Every baby is different, take your time.

first of all they likewhat you had been given them for nine months start from there if you hate veggies thay will too so what you need to do is get infant vitamins supplementr and get some good ole ferina and grits and oatmeal and heartly baby milk and a little surup and butter and sugar and fix em up right. i have never fed my children what the little glass baby food has to offer its just a gimmick another way to make money. just chew your food up and ghibve it to them like your mom did and her mom did and her mom did and her mom did. now thats a momma!!!!

one of my twins -the girl- is very finicky, finally i tried sweet potatoes-jackpot, they are a vegtable but still a little sweet, then move on to others, and it really is okay if she only likes one food for awhile, i would try meats untill she is eating fruits and veggies for awhile.

My little one was eating stage 1 gerber baby food at 4 months old he liked all of the fruits and most of the veggies he didn't care for carrots though. We didn't start him on meat until stage 2 we gave him a little but at stage 3 he was eating alot of it. For meats he mainly liked ham and turkey. Scince she isn't taking the baby food to well start her off with at meals give her formula or breast milk and a jar of baby food but give her one meal with baby food and have her drink water. It sounds to me like part of her refusal of the baby food is she's comfortable with the bottle or the breast but she's not with the jar. Playing with her a bit wail you are trying to feed her the baby food well help her associate the jared food with something possitive and well help her to get comfortible with it.
