First, I hope that you're not "throwing" the ball when you shoot it. The actual power for a basketball shot is generated by your legs -not your arms or shoulders. So weight training is important - squats and arm curls and wrist curls all have their place in generating the power you need for your shot to stop "falling short".
Getting your arms above your head and extending them to their full length before releasing the ball - with a proper follow-through - at the top of your jump will give your shot its proper arc.
Please see a trainer - either at your school or at a YMCA or gym near you - and get the proper exercises and an idea at what weight level you should start your training.
BIGGER - STRONGER - FASTER - works in ALL sports.

well if you are using your biceps from the arm curls that is one reason hahaha! make sure you do some stuff to help your triceps along with your legs! it is all about the arch in your shot if you are to short may want to make sure you are not shooting it to high if so wasted mostion in your arm and wrists! if the ball goes short need to flatten the arch out a little bit! if it is to long need to get more arch on the shot! i played against a guy he was a 6'3'' guard and he could shoot a jump shot from half court! he had no wasted moion in shot at all! just a pure beautiful shot! make sure to snap that wrist when you finished shooting reach for the extra cookies in the cookie jar that is how i know i made sure i finished my shot! or some call it the snake bite! ask your coach to help you with your shot! when i started high school all i could do was shoot 18 feet and in now i can shoot 25 feet and in! i still rather shoot jump shots but not all the time you can! and my coach was the one who helped me!

When you shoot, your shooting hand should be right behind/underneath the ball so you can maximize the force you exert on it. Also, jump forward towards the basket when you shoot so that your momentum makes the ball go further. You don't have to jump too far, just do what feels right and under control.

use your knees. all the power comes from the knees. and as that one guy said learn the proper technique, practice little short shots first. it might get boring but keep at it. you'll have a great shot soon.
