Chinchillas, degus, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, jirds, mice, rats....
What type of rodent (from my alphabetical list or otherwise) is your favorite for a pet, and why do you feel that way?
I *love* rodents in general (always have), but there is one type that I prefer above the others. I'm not going to reveal it yet, because I don't want to unfairly influence anyone's answers. :)

P.S. For the record -- rabbits are not rodents, despite the buckteeth. They are actually lagomorphs. :)

I would say a Guinea pig, Chinchilla or a Rat (especially if you want multiple) but they all have their perks.
-Guinea pigs tend are also nice though; they're easy to handle, relativly clean, live long, they almost never bite, gentle enough to leave with children but they need more personaly care, such as nail clippings and more cleanings. They also have a somewhat demanding diet, needing fresh veges, and require more attention.
-Chinchillas: I've only had an encounter with an untaimed chinchilla but they are pretty clean, freindly, live the longest and are easy to handle when taimed. They may also be prone to less illnesses but have a much more sensitive and limited diet as well as a need for dust bathes, which is fun to watch.
-Rats: If you train rats right they are magnificant company! They are very smart, clean, friendly, social, very easy to feed, and easy to handle.
-Gerbils, Hamsters & Degus: I have had gerbils and hamsters too; they can be nice but get smelly fast, bite alot, tend to be tempramental, aggresive or neotic at times and are dirty and tend to get out and be more noisy. Degus also need dust bathes and are prone to diabetes and tail loss.
-Mice are good to have if you like to watch them (they are fun to watch!), as they are pretty skittish and can't really be played with. They are low and easy maintenace though.

Of rodents, I like rats.
I had an albino rat that liked beer. Go figure. He would ride my shoulder everywhere I went, enjoyed climbing on everything and knew when it was time to go back into his cage. Called him ASSD (pronounced "acid")...short for Aladdin Sarsippius Sulomanagic DeTour. I am weird.
On Chinchillas.... the only experience I have with these soft little creatures was one a girlfriend of mine had. The experience was not all that good. It seemed to dislike men, and would 'bark' and run away from them. Another go figure!

My favourite has to be rats. I have had hamsters, gerbils and rabbits in the past, but nothing compares to rats. Rats are very intelligent, crave human company and I love watching my groups interact. I currently have 11 rats, but I would have many more if there were more hours in the day to give them each the time they need.

Gerbils are the final ultimate, and 2d smartest rodent :] Gerbils rightfully deserve the attractiveness that hamsters at the instant have for no reason. i don't see why human beings love hamsters lots, they're ok yet gerbils are relaxing!

my favorite rodent pet is gerbils. i love them!! because....
Gerbils make great pets for adults as well as for children. They are friendly, easy to care for, and because they are desert animals, do not drink as much as other rodents and therefore do not create as much waste. Gerbils' homes do not smell as most other rodents' homes do. They are loving, friendly, and entertaining! I'd prefer gerbils over any other rodent anyday!

Chinchillas are the best. They are more human like to me and friendlier and funnier than the others from your list of the rodent family.

I guess I would have to say I love the 2 little dwarf Russian hamsters that I adopted when I had to move into my granddaughters playroom. They sure are busy little creatures....especially at night in that wheel. Weeeeeee.....
I grease that wheel a little cause a greased wheel does not squeal.......

I love gerbils. They are friendly and rarely bite. They are such amazing parents. I breed gerbils and the daddy helps the mom with raising the babies. And they actually LOVE their mate. When their mate dies it is not unheard of for the other to grieve itself to death.
