I think that they can work out. My fiancee is in the military and we have been together for eight years and we have been living apart for 4 of them. As long as you have trust, love, respect, and a rendezvous every now and then you should be okay, :)

They do not work unless you had been dating a while before the "distance" became a factor. To meet, get your freak on, then separate a couple of days later to say we can make this work is just plain silly

It depends on the people and the distance. You need two equally committed people and a distance bewteen you that's "doable".... Anything more than 200 miles, in my opinion, is damn near impossible....unless you're both rich and have oodles of time. Best of luck.
