I've been having horrible cramps off and on in my lower abdomen, sort of like menstrual like cramps and gas cramps (it's not gas though) and lower back pain. I have an appointment for an ultrasound on Wednesday because I had one last week and they couldn't see a heartbeat. I was just wondering if there was still hope. Thanks so much!

I am pregnant, they have seen a gestational sac, just not an embryo. I am 6 weeks and 4 days today.

That doesn't sound good at all.
How far along are you?
I've had two miscarriages myself. I'll tell you a little bit about how it went with me.
With the first miscarriage, everything started out great. I had went to another appointment at 8 weeks, and the doctor couldn't find a heartbeat, so he told me to come back in a week. I went back the next week, still no heartbeat, and the baby's measurements hadn't grown. He then told me I was going to miscarry. And i'll tell you, it's one of the worst things in this world. Just sitting around waiting for it to happen, knowing you can't stop it. I was fine for nearly two weeks, and then I woke up one day with horrible cramps in my lower abdomen and back. I almost couldn't stand the pain. I knew it was happening. I suffered all day and still nothing had happened. I hadn't even started bleeding yet. I finally fell asleep, and later woke up with bed soaked in blood. The pain was horrible, and the blood was bright red with huge clots. I called my doctor and he wanted me at the hospital as soon as possible. I was admitted upon arrival, and went through the entire night with the cramps, bleeding, and clotting. Finally I passes the tissue and the embryo. The doctor then checked my body, and let me go home.
With my second pregnancy, the doctor said everything was going to be fine as he could tell. But low and behold, come 10 weeks, still no heartbeat. I was again told I was going to miscarry. But this time, being that i'm young, 19, and healthy, he wanted to perform a D&C to make sure my body was okay and able to bare children. I had the surgery done immidiately, and results were fine. I still have no clue as to why I lost both babies.
I don't want to sugar coat miscarriage at all, nor do I want to scare you. I just really want you to be prepared for it if it does happen. Because the doctors like to lead it on as being like a 'period'. Let me tell you the first miscarriage was like no period i've ever had. Please don't stress, that won't help you, or the baby. But if it comes out as you are going to miscarry, be ready. It's painful, and scary. I wish I, or anyone else, never had to feel that sort of emotional or physical pain, and loss. I really hope you do not miscarry. I wish you all the luck, and I'll be praying for you. Good luck sweetie!

This happened to my niece last year. The hormone levels just dropped and the baby didn't grow beyond a very small stage. The doctor said there's no anticipating when that might happen in any given pregnancy. They did a follow-up ultrasound and then gave her medication to induce cramping so her body could naturally expel the tissue from the miscarriage. She said it was like having a really heavy period.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It might not help much to know it right now, but my niece is now pregnant again... due in April with her first.. a healthy and active little girl. So you will survive the sadness, and it won't be long before you can try again with assurance that it can be successful.

I hope you went to a reputable gynae. When you did your last ultrasound, you are only about 5 weeks. The heartbeat can only be detected from week 6 to 7. So, pls do not worry too much. As for your cramps, it may be due to the development of the uterus and you may be more sensitive to your bodily responses. Lower back pain may be one of the symptoms of pregnancy. I am sure your doctor did prescribe you some progesterone pills to help stablise your pregnancy if it is unstable in any case cos the placenta will only be able to produce at month 3. And if it is really in the worst scenario of a miscarriage, please do not despair. God only gives us the best. If it is a healthy embryo, it will then be able to grow normally. Usually when it is abnormal, it is better that it stops on its growth rather than having abnormalities at the later stage, where we are put into higher risk and have to cope more dearly. We are young and we can try again. At least one fact, it goes to show that we are able to conceive, unlike some who are unable to. Just to share with you. I had a miscarriage in May 2005 and had a D & C procedure to remove the embryo. After that, I took good care of myself by eating right, taking supplements and folic acid. I also make sure that my husband did the same. I am now pregnant, 26 weeks with a healthy baby boy and this time, I make sure that I had an experienced and responsible gynae. Remember, there's always hope if you have it. Meanwhile take good care and you can email me at lady_general71@yahoo.com if you need someone to talk to. Take good care and God bless.

they are really intense pain, though some people have different experiences mine were in my lower abdomin with a radiating pain across my hips and lower back. I don't have menstrual cramps most of the time so im not sure if its like that. Mine lasted from a minute to about five depending for about a week and then I had bleeding after that. Its probably a good plan to see a doctor, though just in case though it could easily just be something else.
hope for the best!

Did they put a sound monitor? Could you HEAR a heartbeat?
If the baby is not in the right position, they won't SEE a heartbeat, but he/she could still be okay.
Are you bleeding RED? filling a pad?
Please, girl, go to the Emergency room! Don't wait til wendsday!
Hopefully, it is okay, and just some gas, but do NOT use anything to stop the "gas pains", okay?
Please go to the ER.
Let us know if u r okay, by using the comment button.
Best of luck to you!

I really feel for you, because when I was just weeks pregnant, I had sharp pains, that felt like someone was poking me inside with a fork, I went to the emergency, and it was all fine.
I ended up with a wondefful pregancy, with some harsh heartburn, but all was well, and so was he!

Chances are you lost the baby, however I cannot understand why anyone would wait until WEDNESDAY! A miscarriage is a medical emergency and if you think you are having one, get help now! I am not sure if you are telling us you think you may be pregnant or what is going on here.

They feel the same as having cramps during your period. It's the same cramping of the uterus trying to expel its contents.
