In brief: Dual-core is referring to the technology of having more than one CPU on the same die. The AMD Athlon X2 is a dual-core CPU, and so is Intel's Pentium D and Core 2 Duo. The Core 2 Duo is the newest of the pack, and is leading in just about every area killing the competition since its release 6 months ago.

There's a great site for questions like this. Go to http://www.wikipedia.org and search on both. Bookmark it for future reference...

Dual Core means a chip has two cores (basically 2 CPUs put together into one package). Core Duo was Intel's first stab at Dual Core 65nm technology in the laptop market. Core 2 Duo is the full product line revision with a complete overhaul in terms of design (Server, Mobile, and Desktop new architecture design). The Server part of Core 2 is Woodcrest, the Mobile is Merom and the Desktop is Conroe, but they are all called Core 2 Duo.

The Core 2 Duo family is the best processor family you can buy - for sheer performance AND for performance per watt of electricity AND performance per dollar spent. You can't go wrong with Core 2 Duo.
