I don't think that's quite the right question to ask.

Whether or not an engine pollutes doesn't really have much to do with how the engine works. It has to do with the fuel source that the engine uses.

Internal combustion engines produce a lot of pollution when they run on gasoline, for example.

But if you run an internal combustion engine on hydrogen, there's no pollution whatsoever.

Or, for another example, a stirling engine can run off of any kind of heat source. Whether or not it pollutes depends on how you make the heat.

All engines pollute. Even Hydrogen if you want to get down to it. The hydrogen has to come from somewhere. The pollution is from generating the electricity use to separate hydrogen and oxygen.

Electric motors run on batteries and if you don't think batteries are a pollutant, think again.

Sorry, but all engines pollute. Even water-driven dynamos. They all use oil and grease as a lubricant, and this must periodically be changed. There is a limit to the reformulation of old oil, so some of it will always end up as trash.

The cleanest-burning fuel is hydrogen. When hydrogenn burns, it forms pure water and heat. Nothing else. Unfortunately, its very expensive to make, and very dangerous to transport - can you say "Hindenburg"? I knew you could! :-D

is this a trick question?..........all internal combustion engine,s pollute to some extent.........so what engine doesn't pollute...other than an electric motor.....none........even a nuclear powered steam engine would pollute....if only a negligible amount.....the only thing that I can think of that produces power without pollution would be a water driven electric dynamo.......like you,d see at hoover dam.

I would say that an engine that has decent power is a Natural Gas engine, and it has less polutants than a gasoline or diesel engine. It also doesn't corrode internally like gasoline, so the engines life lasts longer.
