I posted a question about what you would spend $480 million dollars on (war cost) & was amazed at how many people think war actually is a positive thing to spend money on. I'm not a pacifist - I mean, kick their *** if they attack - but it's an old strategy and not ideal.

But maybe I'm wrong. So I thought, if war/violence can bring about peace in the world (it hasn't for 000's of years but hey), maybe we should start beating our kids? Employing bullies at school to do it whilst we work? I know WE stopped doing that for a reason (why was it again?) but it might be a good thing if they grow up to be peaceful. Thoughts?

Perhaps we should just nuke the entire planet, plan it out carefully, get intentional cooperation, and BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
What do you think? The only alternative is to... work for peace? surely not! We don't want peace do we? Everybody loves war, don't they?
The fact is there has never been any serious international cooperation on anything, that is why wars exist, nations are not good at cooperating in a peaceful way, they all want to be on top of the pile. Every nation wants better things for themselves than for the other nations. There will not be an end to wars in the near future, especially when the western world is governed by the likes of Bush and Blair. It's not related to intelligence, its related to intention. Just like the latest "friendly fire" incident, the pilot obviously intended to shoot something, and did. "They could have markers on, but so what, I've just got to shoot something". BOOM!
To me it seems so obvious that more effort should be put into making war a thing of the past, and helping people to have the right attitude towards it is not to be underestimated. Civilian populations of different nations generally get on fine together when politicians keep out of the way, or there isn't an aggressive group of troublemakers to be found, such as hyped up football supporters, but football is just like that, a 'peaceful war'.

I can see the connection between the two half's of your question, As for slapping babies, definitely no, 4/5 onwards well only if its really in their interest. IE. from stopping them running into the road. As for $480 M dollars on the Iraq war, well it seems that nothing is for nothing, I dare say the arm's suppliers are rubbing their hands together, and no doubt the American Government will recoup a fair share in taxing the arm's suppliers, so everyone a winner, except for the families who loss their loved ones !!

Maybe a war is what the world needs. We're struggling to cope with too many people - but some war/violence would make a start.

Sometimes you have to defend your values/country against those who would attack them. Appeasement never works. I think that your extrapolation onto the mild chastisement of children is inappropriate.

If nobody ever defended anything, then perhaps you would have a kind of peace, but you would have succumbed to a legion of autocratic bullies who would cow the people and make them pay a thousand times over.

Human nature is predominantly war like. We thrive on conflict, confrontation and competition. It`s how we are. To change the nature of the beast would take generations. I don`t believe we have the time, inclination or motivation to become placid. I admire your idealism, it would be comforting to live in an environment of contentment and peace.

Of course we shouldn't slap babies and people who think we can get to peace by means of war are mad.

Fighting for peace is like fcuking for virginity!

Violence begets violence. Only a fool would believe that war brings peace.
