If it says "brakes", that means you're parking brake is partially engaged. If you parking brake is not engaged, the switch needs to be adjusted or replaced, its not a big deal though.

Different cars might have various meanings with the warning light. On one of mine, a Ford, Windstar, the light will also go one if the brakes are not adjusted properly, or any sign of brake malfunction will set it off, plus low on brake fluid will light it up. The parking or emergency brake is another cause for the light to go on.

You DO NOT necessarily have something wrong with anything... other than low brake fluid caused by worn brake pads / shoes. As the brakes wear, the caliper and slave cylinder fill with fluid from the reservoir.
Yes, it's a closed system, but not to the point that brake fluid can't leave the master cylinder. It has to to allow the brakes to work.
Fill the master cylinder and have the brakes checked.

One of two thing, either the park brake is engaged partally, and setting the light off. Or the more common. The brake fluid is low. Do not top the brake fluid up as this can cause problems down the line. Take it to a garage or brake shop and have them diagnose why the fluid is low. Some of the common causes of low brake fluid is low brake pads, rotors close to discard, leaking hardwear, or shoes are low, or drums are at discard. Have brake inspection preformed as soon as possible, and have this problem diagnosed.

brake fluid is low is the first check. Second check is to see why did it go low In other words, the wheel cylinders have to be checked and lines and then the master.

Probably low on brake fluid. It must be investigated by a mechanic though because they only lose fluid when something is wrong.

If you don't have the park brake set then you have a problem with the hydraulics. Need to get it checked NOW!
