Betta fishes are aggressive in nature, they should be separated, otherwise one might kill the other. Betta fishes often prefer to be in a fish tank alone. You might get lucky and theyll mate but they are such angry animals they might hurt each other.

We have been breeding Betta's for 10 years. The last two for profit, so we will try and answer your question in a simple way.
The size of your tank will determine if you can keep a female and male Betta together. In small confined spaces the male will harass the female to the point of killing her if she is not ready to spawn. In larger spaces with lots of hiding places the female can usually keep from being hurt by hiding and out swimming the male.
During the spawning ritual the male and female will both nip at each others fins. There is no cause for alarm at this courtship behavior. True out and out fights are rare where a female can retreat to safety.
We breed in 10 gallon aquariums and routinely leave the female in the tank with the male until she spawns. We have never had a female killed or hurt badly. Some females are in the tank for mins. before spawning some for 2 to 3 days. They have hiding places of floating plants on top of the water and rock caves on
the bottom.
To go into everything you would need to know to successfully breed Betta's would take pages of typing. I would recommend the book Betta's a complete introduction by Walt Maurus as a good starting reference on the subject.
Good Luck

Typically Bettas aren't supposed to share space. As you found out, they are very territorial. There is most likely a time they will want to mate but for now, separate them before they kill each other.

You cant keep them in the same tank the whole time or they will kill eachother. And if you by chance get them to mate, then you still have to seperate them. And if she has her fry in the same tank as him you have to seperate ALL of them from each other, because the male will kill the female while she is resting on the bottom and both of the adults will kill the fry.

you need to separate them NOW!
when bettas mate you can't just put them together like that.
here is a page of betta breeding basics. you need a lot of equipment and a lot of patience or your fish won't mate they will kill each other.

They need to be kept serperate. But they can stay in the same tank. Just get a divider and make sure they can't get through to each other.

Maybe fighting is part of the mating ritual. They might be figting over space if you have a small tank though.
