Good Question. It is actually time that the common people and the "smart" politicians of India starts considering this idea seriously, and puts it up for a public debate. A time will soon come when the Hindu's in India will head towards being "Minority" in the "Secular-Democracy" and start getting run-over.
If you want to look at statistics, in the year of Independence, Hindu's represented 97% of the population, in 1960, they represented 92%, 1990 - 87%....and this is 2007. Some basic mathametics will say what happens by 2050 which is not as far as we think it is.
Moreover, Bangladesh is not a secular country as one of the writers here say, its a Islamic nation - OFFICIALLY as well.
Hinduism as a state religion will make India more peaceful socially..Since ever known times, Hinduism is the most tolerant religion(perhaps the only) religion in the world..
Hindu rulers pardoned arabic robbers like Alluddin khilgi 13 times before he could win..we welcomed with open arms Vascodi gama and British who were in India to sell clothes..
This tolerance is misused by everybody and every other religion tries to take advantage of this tolerance no matter what..After seven centuries of oppression, Hindus are slowly realizing this and they are fighting only the "oppression"..no Hindu will ever consider of trying to convert others to Hinduism..
Declaring India, the Hindu nation will give the majority Hindus, the very needed secure feeling and also sends a strong message to muslims in India who have been "enjoying" India for generations but tries to be loyal to Pakistan or other foreign nations..
At the same time, any minority people should not be concerned bcz if its not for the tolerance of Hindus, other religions in India would've been long vanished..

Hinduism is intself secular.Declaring India a Hindu Nation does not serve much purpose today. On the other hand measures must be taken to protect Hinduism.Religion Based reservations in the name of "minority and majority" and "Caste and Creed" created by foolish, short sighted vote bank oriented politicians must be eradicated.Classic example: Religious Minorities can run educational institutions at will and wish and "get paid for it by the Government" whereas the Majority religion has to spend from its pocket. As a first step ,the service of Religious Establishment must be restricted to social service .Education is a basic need like food and water are the prime responsibilities of the Government and so only the Government should run the schools and colleges.
Hinduism is a combination of cultures ,tribes or castes and vedic faith. Its power is inborn,it is a natural religion and knows no barriers. The modern religions were born through Communciation,Conversions and Conflicts.Islam in Iran is a living example.Christianity in Rome or Peru is no different.Age old civilizations and religions were replaced through communication, conversion or conflict or a combination of the three.Hinduism is an exception. In India , it thrives and survives.Infact it even managed to "Hinduise" the foreign religions-Christianity in India has adopted a lot from Hinduism and call it "Indianisation of Christianity.H.H Pope John Paul himself pointed Hinduism as the Mother of all Religions. The Islamic streams such as Sufism sees simlarities of Worshiping Saints or Gurus as in Hindu Teachings. So its not Conversion of India to a Hindu state that is the need of the hour ...its effective steps to PROTECT HUNDUISM that is required first.

First, of course, you assume that Muslim women are treated shabbily. And who are you to judge that? And yes India is a secular country by outward appearances. But the "cast" system in India is still there.

Not all Indians are Hindu, in fact, according to the Indian census data of 2001, religions other than Hinduism represent 20% (more than 205 million Indians).

Even if it becomes a Hindu state it won;t make much difference. Those of other religions will always be free to practice their own religion.Peace loving Hindus will not harm anyone.
But to the Hindus there will be one advantage. The opportunistic religious conversions will not be easy. That is why other religions object to this.
INDIA should be declared a Hindu state to protect Hinduism.

Simply because India is a parliamentary democracy which separates religion from politics. Islamic countries are not democratic...they are theocracies that are run by religious zealots following what they "believe" are the dictums of their particular ideologies. Their ideologies are not uniform...leading to infighting between Sheites and Sunnies and many other sects, all under the umbrella of Islam. This is the danger of patterning government after religious beliefs.
