For memory cards the difference in price is due to the quality of the card.

As to your question why not every company making bigger memory cards to get more profit ? So, actually there are many older devices in market which can't work with higher capacity memory cards and to retain in that market memory card manufacturers have to sell small capacity cards too. For ex. Nokia 6600 mobile phone's processor is not capable of handelling memory card higher than 512 mb without getting problems.

Apart from memory cards, the price difference in Memory chips and hard drives are due to the speed, the frequency and the quality of the product.

There are lots of specs associated with a particular type of memory. The timing specs are usually the ones that matter. For example, there are many brands for PC3200 DDR SDRAM. Although PC3200 means they all run at 400MHz, some are a little quicker than others because of other ratings such as CAS latency. A memory stick with a CAS rating of 2 is going to be a much better performer than another rated at CAS 3 (the lower the better).

Also, some of the performance sticks have heat spreaders, which are ideal for overclocking. This of course adds to the manufacturing cost, and also raises its value.

Then there's flash memory, such as MMC or SD. Some operate a bit quicker than others (though to be honest, I don't think the speed for digital flash media is going to vary by much).

As you can see, there's more than meets the eye in some situations. Take it lightly with a grain of salt, but hopefully that helps...

I've wondered that myself. Over the years I've had 5 different digital cameras and each one required me to buy a different card.Just like the printer companies. They sell cheap printers knowing they will make a ton on the replacement ink cartridges.
