If you move to another country, you should learn their language, period. I believe in people retaining their culture and beliefs, as long as they do not interfere with the rights of others and are legal in the country in which they are living.

I wouldn't want people to move here and become cookie cutter families of June & Ward Cleaver or whatever an "American" is supposed to be. They should keep their uniqueness, but being able to effectively communicate is the key.

Yes I think so, since I am an immigrant I totally got absorbed into my adopted country. Immigrants should keep their traditions, it's good for the children, but otherwise I think it's just polite that as soon as you leave your house you speak english and behave according to the culture of your new homeland. I feel, if they come here, it means they want a better life, therefore don't haggle in grocery stores, don't burb and fart openly and be tolerant of Christianity, including Christmas, It's not a festival tree nor a holiday tree, its a Christmas tree. Don't get peeved if the employee at the grocery store can't understand what you want, speak english.

If by assimilation, you mean leaving every aspect of their culture behind, then no.
However, when someone settles into a new country, it is important to learn their new countries cultural traditions in the workplace, and learn new skills to be successful in their new country. That could involve learning how to speak a new language(while not forgetting the old)

Definitely. When one immigrates to a new country, one should try to adapt, by following the customs and speaking the language of the adopted country. Otherwise why immigrate? It's not for to come to a new place and demand that people there adapt to you by speaking your language and giving way to your culture. Just so you know, I'm from a minority race.

What exactly is American culture? We don't really have a specific culture because this country is made up of immigrants? So no they shouldn't assimilate... They should eventually learn english but what makes america so great are all the different people and cultures, why would we want it all the same

well...there sounds like a very obvious question...yes. If you are a goverment and some people want to move to your country, you would hope that they would at least try to speak your language, understand your culture and customs and make efforts to connect with the existing people, no? If not, what's the point of migrating?
