I was given the safe & the combination. The door is open & the plunger is out so the door will not close. The safe sat around at the last owners place & they can't quite remember the sequence to operate it. The lock itself is a sargent.

There should be a SERIAL NUMBER stamped somewhere on the locking mechanism. - I know that the Sargent Co. keeps a regsiter of all their factory manufactured combinations.
Call the 800-toll free number of Sargent lock company for this reference information on your locking mechanism.

If the safe's 4 numbers have been given to you in the proper sequence, try this:

Rotate the dial CLOCKWISE (CW)

AT LEAST 4 times then stop on FIRST #

Rotate the dial COUNTER CLOCKWISE (CCW) 2 TIMES
stop on SECOND # (during part of 3rd revolution);

Rotate the dial CW 1 TIME; stop on THIRD # (during part of second revolution)

Lastly, rotate dial CCW to FOURTH # (You'll probably hear/feel a CLUNK as all the tumblers line up.) Verify that the handle lets you pull the bolt(s) (you call plunger) back so that the open safe can be closed.

CAUTION!!!
However, you would want to check your success several times before you actually close the safe. (Actually you can see all of what you're doing if you remove the plate on the back of the door and watch the tumblers (4) position themselves from innermost to outermost as you're dial turning.)
