I can't think of any of us who are upset that the war of northern aggression was lost. The southern states were within their rights to secede from the union. Had the south won the war the U.s. would probably be more like europe than what it is now. Several small country's instead of one.The loss of the war by the south changed the United States from a constitutional republic to a democratic state. Here in the south we were taught about the civil war what ever the current history books had in them. BTW The victor writes the history.

Kind of. Slavery was a crucial sub-issue of the larger issue of States' rights. A lot of the States were tired of being kicked around by Washington. A few years before the Civil War, Maine had mounted a secessionist movement.

I am sorry that slavery was an issue which gave the Federal government the moral authority to consolidate a thoroughly immoral degree of power. I am glad that the war ended slavery but I am crushed that we inherited the intrusive Nanny-State that we have today.

The country was pretty split over the issue. There were plenty of abolitionists in the South just as there were plenty of pro-slavery adherents in the North, most notably President Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire.

History gets painted with a pretty broad brush so that shallow people can digest it. I am sure at the time it was a far more complex than we give it credit today. For instance, I'm willing to bet there were politicians who wanted the slaves freed but voted to keep it because they didn't want to drive down the wages of their constituents, etc., etc.

Southerners are just proud of their heritage and I don't blame them. I was born in PA and never saw or heard anyone appreciate what their state stood for but down here, regardless of what's being said, the Confederate Battle Flag is still flown proudly along side of the American Flag.. I live in South Carolina and have to disagree with the person that said Yankees are not welcome here. I've always felt welcome and I'm proud to have made the South my home. Fifty-seven years ago I was stationed in the south and there was still a lot of Civil War talk then but that sort of thing is hardly ever talked about anymore. (Except at the re-enactments and then it's mostly in fun)

No, not really. We weren't alive then, so don't have a say in that. There are those that disagree with governmental politics, and blame the Civil War for that, you just won't find them.

Yes. Take a trip to the South and see for yourself.

BTW they call it The War of Northern Aggression.

World history would be vastly different had the South won. There is no way the United States would have ever become a major power in the world had it split. Lincoln knew that this split would inevitably destroy the country as we would be divided and weak. To be honest, we would probably be speaking German or Russian and praising either Hitler or Stalin, you can take your pick.

Yes they are. I've been to Civil War reenactments and they whine thru the whole thing. Why, it happened a long time ago and it shouldn't be an issue today,

Most of them in South Carolina never got over it. They have yearly memorials for things like the burning and sacking of Columbia and the battles at Aiken etc. They call me Yankee and scare northerners who relocated here.

lol, god I sincerly hope not. Its really time to move on!
To those who said, there would be less crime and no illegal immigration....I do agree completely. Because honestly who would want to migrate to a slavery country. lol I can just see the cubans getting on the boat to come for that one! lol.
But on the plus side, we'd probably terrify Al Quaida.
