Help choosing a Fire Academy-Best, Worst, and Personal Experiences?

Question

What is the best fire academy in the country? I would like to be able to apply for government fire stations as well as state stations and I heard that you have to have special training for government positions- or that their system is different than the certification program (firefighter I & II). Also, if you have attended a fire academy- I'd love to hear more about it- such as what was good and bad, weekends off, length of academy, or something odd you were required to do.

My husband is a retired firefighter, reaching rank of 1st Lt. He says each state has a fine fire academy-you can inquire at your local dept. Training Officer should be a good help. Paid Fire Depts. usually select which members attend the academy and when. Volunteer companies also send their members to the academy. The state allots certain # of openings available. The National Fire Academy is located in Emmittsburg,MD. National Academy has week-long classes, state academies vary. He says there wasn't anything odd he had to do-but that the classes are intense. Ladders,knots,fire tech, plans of attack,hydraulics,ventilation.... the list is long,indeed. Another type of training you might want to consider is the military, firefighters are needed there,also.Check your local library or bookstore for the AVCO Civil Service manuals for even more information.
