As you look at engine headers it may be necessary to use short "shorty" headers if the motors packed into an engine bay. late model Mustangs are an example. Look up: Borla exhaust systems. You'll see an example of short primary header exhaust headers required where there's a clearance issue. Their primary pipes are unequal length and short. Clearly a step above the standard cast iron counterpart. Any V8 street car benefits with equal length 1 5/8 small primary long (30-36 in.) tubes dumping into a small collector. This combination is good to 383 cubic inch small block Chevy. Small primaries helps the exhaust port keep the exit velocity high. This reduces low end loss of torque and horsepower. This is extremely beneficial to an auto. trans. car as their low gear is like a 6 speed standard's second or third gear rolling off the starting light. A new 502 or 572 big block Chevy responds better to a full 2.O - 2 1/8 diameter primary equal length tube.

Short headers take the place of factory exhaust..and normally are designed to bolt or match up to the same pipes that were connected to the factory manifolds. The performance is not as good..but the performance boost vs/cost/convenience makes them popular.

I assume your talking shorty headers. Well they usually cost less. There easier to install. Also they offer more ground clearance.etc.

They're shorter. Use them or don't depending on what else you need to fit under the hood.
