i need some help factoring this problem completely. its driving me nuts.

y^2 + 8yz + 72y

Ok, there is a y common to all terms:

y(y +8z +72). This polynomial can't be factored further,.

maybe you're looking for a factorable quadratic of format (y+a)(y+bz). You won;t get it though, since your equation doesn't have a term in z. You can still factor something. So do it. First y
y ( y + 8z + 72).
Then the constant 8
y ( y + 8 (z+9) )

y(y+8z+72) is as far as it goes.

just factor out the y from everything, so you get

y(y+8z+72)
