I work in a brake shop. I get this a lot. Most of the time, when brakes are alowed to get this low, they can damage the seal inside the caliper and the caliper will start leaking if the piston is retracted. Whenever a vehicle comes in with grinding brakes, I always recomend after I have done a complete inspection, Pads, Calipers, Rotors, a Brake flush. That is kind of the minimum for grinding brakes in my shop. Then again, it all depends on how long they have been grinding for (milage wise) and under what conditions. Sometimes if the vehicle has just started to grind and the rotors are close to nominal thickness, they can be machined and salvaged. However, most of the time, the grinding has taken away too much of the rotor and the rotor is nothing more then scrap metal. One thing to remember, if the rotors have been grinding ALWAYS put pads on a new surface, either machined or new rotors, putting them on a ground rotor will kill the pad withen a matter of miles.

Have the job done right. If you take care of your can and do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, it will save you money down the road. Even if it costs a lot for pads calipers, rotors, and the flush, and whatever work may need to be done, it is worth it. Would you rather stop, or just slow down?

there is an indicator on your brake pads that makes a squeeking sound when they are getting low, grinding is either a a worn out brake pad or maybe a warped rotor. Get them checked and expect to have them replaced and the rotors turned down. If you let them go like that you will need to buy new drums or rotor which will run you a few hundred dollars more. Note: If you need new rotors or drums, the mechanic will not fix your brakes without replacing them.

Your Brake Pads are worn out.

Once you start to grind the Rotors depending ho deepp the are they usually can not be cut to reuse with new pads.

You need New Brake Roters and Brake Pads.

If they just started doing it you may still have time to get the linings replaced..be it pads or shoes..if you keep driving it you will spend much more to get it fixed, once the brakes get past the linings they are metal on metal. Act soon!

That usually means you've gone through the brakes and are on the rotors. You need to get that looked at ASAP!
