Yes, this is perfectly normal and usually seen somewhere between five to seven weeks. The yolk sac is responsible for nourishing the developing baby until the placenta takes over. Generally a week or so after seeing the yolk sac, the fetal pole (or baby) will be seen. With some women it may take a little longer because the position of their uterus may make it a little more difficult with the transvaginal ultrasound but I am guessing that in a week, you'd definitely see more on the ultrasound.
Best of luck to you.

Okay i went through this so I will tell you what I know.
No- a yolk sac does not guarantee there is a baby.
But a fetal pole does.
Have another ultrasound at 8 weeks. If there's nothing there, it's not a valid pregnancy it's called a blighted ovum. This just means the egg got fertilized but it didn't implant right, so your body recognized the fertilization but the egg was absorped. Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

It is really too early to tell. You can have a sac with no fetal pole. Meaning it is just an empty sac. You need to see the fetal pole or see the fetal heartbeat. I imagine you had a transvaginal us and you were very early. Check back with your ob at about 6 or 7 weeks gestation.

Although this isnt what you wanted to hear, it doesn;t neccesarily mean that a baby will grow to term. It just means that an embryo SHOULD form. In some rare cases, an embryo will begin to form and not grow after 5 weeks, but still have a heart beat. The only thing to do, as bad as it may seem, (in a case like this) is to have a DNC done. Very cruel but it would have to be done. I'm sure your DR will order another ultrasound in a few more weeks if he hasnt already. Good luck and best baby wishes to you.

well if your dr didnt seem concerned then my guess would be yes it will grow. But this early on you will have to wait and see. Why were you getting an ultrasound done so early? All babies start out as a sac they start getting human features around 8 weeks. good luck.
