Hi. I have taught writing and literature for about ten years. I have been a hit with students, but for over 2 years, I have been longing to do something else. I need suggestions badly. I don't want to think that all i can do is waitress OR teach. I have been in the classroom my whole life and I'm growing cynical of it. HELP!

There are a lot of other things you can do as a literature teacher.
You yourself can write: write book reviews, reviews about different authors, get more involved into literature criticism, write blogs, articles, short stories, or a book if you prefer.

Other practical implementation of your knowledge would be editing and copy writing. There are a lot of companies that would need similar services.

You can also do transcriptions.

You can become a parent educator.

And most likely you have a lot of other good skills. Why don't you stop and think which ones of them you would really like to use besides classroom teaching, and what would it take to be able to use of them or may be develop them a little. And enjoy life.

Take a sabatical. Clearly your gift is teaching but you need to travel and bit and refuel.

Pretend to want to write a novel. Mabye you will probably not tho. Its ok

You may have many things your talented at. We have much locked in we dont knwo about but you've got a gift.

P.S. You ever read Philip K.DIck. Not most suffisticated in terms of his language but rich in ideas and I love the political datedness of his work. Funny with war on terror, these cold war stuff seems relevant again but anyway, i love.

I also love comics. I am ignorant enough to consider some of them richer literature than people expect to find. I love works of Plastic man by Cole, anything by Eisner, to name a few. Food for thought if you want to look at something fresh.

Freelance editing. Almost all magazines rely on outside, freelance editors these days. There's plenty of work, and it's pretty fun if you are organized, detail-oriented and you like to write. You might start by contacting the major publishing houses.
