The example you give raises more questions. Is she telling you that there were nuclear tests in San Francisco? Also, why is an English teacher discussing this in class? Usually, whenever someone gives you a simplified explanation of the other side's argument it is b.s., such as, "they don't want to do it because they're all racist." Maybe they did extensive testing and found the radiation levels were normal.

It sounds like your school should start drug testing. Why is an english teacher making social comments and stating conspiracies when they should be teaching english? Plus where did she get her information since I doubt anyone took an ad out saying that was done? I have heard many stories like this in my lfe and every time when you try to confirm it the story starts filling with holes such as what type of experiments were done in a city where they would need to clean up radiation, I mean there is no way to know that just blacks will be there.

It could be a combination of the two, remember, at one point in this country African Americans were considered to be 2ND class citizens with no rights and the Government could careless about the health and safety of the people in that area, if the site is still hot and the navy is not doing anything to clean it up, I would say that it is definitely a racist situation, and the people of that city need to speak up for themselves and take the Navy to court and force them to clean it up.

I live across the bay from Hunters Point Naval shipyard and it is not contaminated with radioactive waste. It was used as a shipyard from WWII till about the mid 80's. It mainly has groundwater contaminated with chemicals issues. Just a side note, the city of SF is in negotiation with the SF 49ers football team to build them a new stadium on the shipyard site. But first they have to finish cleaning it up.
Don't let people lead you to believe that minorities are forced to live next to waste sites and shipyards. Love Canal in NJ was middle class white. Minorities who tend to be poorer tend to live where rents are cheaper which tend to be near factories and such. It's not that they were "put" there" , that is just where poor people in general migrate

I think that in an ideal world, your teacher would let you develop your own opinions instead of forcing hers on her captive audience. What she should have done is present the situation to you and asked you to suggest why things haven't been cleaned properly. A teacher's job isn't to spout his or her beliefs to students, but to guide a student to gain knowledge. Without having sufficient information about Hunter's Point and this situation, I would suggest that it is possible that race had little or nothing to do with it. My suggestion to you would be to research the situation and make up your own mind. In fact, feel free to question your teacher. Suggest other possible motives. Greed? Laziness? Negligence?

I think that she is basing the observation on opinion. It is possible that it has some merit, but usually people don't clean stuff up because it costs to much and their too lazy (just check with any EPA agency office). I doubt their first reason for avoiding cleaning it up is due to a majority African American population.

That is probably a stupid reason. You should ask your teacher who was in charge at deciding not to clean up left over radiation and what proof she has of them being racist. I'm guessing she made it up.

Combination of both, did you laugh when your English teacher actually said that? I would because it is racist but is also so stupid that it deserves to be laughed at. Maybe not outloud but atleast in your head that a group of people would rationalize their actions that way.

What does a high school English teacher know about radiation? Better not eat too many bananas, that radioactive potassium-40 might get you.

You may want to ask your English teacher what that has to do with English. It sounds like she is trying to be a social studies teacher, which is not what she was hired to do.
