For the same reason many Germans later joined or were susceptible to the Nazi party following World War I when they were completely starving and repressed due to the League of Nations measures taken against them. Similarly, the South was repressed and poor due to Reconstruction measures placed upon them. Lincoln was assassinated by the time this took place. Who knows if things would've been different had he not been killed. I would think that they would've been. Anyway, the point of both of these history lessons is this: When people are poor, repressed, and uneducated or afraid of the future, there is a tendency for groups to get together and blame their problems on others and to make themselves feel better than this group. Hence, the Nazis blamed and persecuted the Jews (and others) for WWI and the Ku Klux Klan blamed and oppressed African Americans (and others) for their difficult times during Reconstruction. Hope this short answer helps.

People are afraid of what they don't understand and naturally afraid of change. The 20s was the beginning of a massive cultural overhaul (women's suffrage, blacks beginning to be seen as equal human beings, some native american tribes wanting recognition, etc.) Unfortunately, things are always darkest before the dawn and the Ku Klux Klan is the final dying ember of a breed of people who want to be able to feel superior over others when in truth there is no such thing. Another addition to that is fiscally, we were on a major decline as a country and whites wanted to dehumanize blacks so as not to have to compete with them in the workforce. Very interesting subject, good luck!!

hmm, I guess because in the 20's, because of the an economic boom, there was a large class separation with whites on the tops and blacks on the bottom. It could also have something to do with the fact that since men had died in WWI there were lots of unescorted white women around and they didn't want the black men around them (just a thought). There was also a bit of a cultural rebellion, women becomeing flappers (partying single women) and jazz music which the more conservative white community would have been trying to surpress by blaming it on the blacks. Prohibithion may have been a factor though I don't know how exactly. The souther states were still upset about losing the civil war.

At this moment theirs five times more Knight of the KKK not in the south, most all KKK members or somewhere other then the south, but were the racist ones,?white and black get along pretty well where I come from.
Because after the war the southerners for one were left with rebuilding from the damage done by the Yankees, there children were left to rebuild, they had it rough so their wasn't a lot of KKK activity with the masses.of Southerners.
The southerners had run off the Yankee carpet baggers and the ignorant unschooled, non reading,x slaves who ran the state government by control of the Yankees, the original knights of the KKK were heroes who ran of the Yankees, from the south.and took back the state legislative branch of government for the rightfull people.when the KKK got racist and violent the original founders quit.
over a 1000 blacks were hung or killed in new york city during the war of northern aggression.northerners in general or much more racist then Southerners who have lived with black folk for hundred of years.
the 20s was when the generation of people who fought in the war,had children and they grew up and realized that they needed to keep power for the whites, and to have segregation, and not let blacks vote.and keep control.as they were afraid the blacks would influence their culture and did want that at all.were all going to be a brown race of people one day.

I'd think a lot of them did our of fear of change. Like many people in this world, they didn't want the status quo to change, and joined the group they thought had the most power for preventing change. But I think it's also important to remember that there were a lot of people that Didn't join, too.

Same reason people turn to Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
