As he was from a masonic family I would suspect it was as a coming of age thing so sometime between 18 and 21 I guess.......
Freemasonry was very common with the wealthy ruling classes then.

Washington was Initiated in the Lodge at Fredericksburg, Virginia. on November 4th 1752 on March 3rd 1753 he was passed to the Degree of a Fellow Craft. on August 4th 1753 Brother Washington was Raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason.

I know he was a young man and I believe I read in Thomas Flemming's biography he was 17 or 18.
