Yes, you do need a license. Fortunately, there should be a little sticker somewhere on the case that has the license. You should only need the number if you do a reinstall of the OS at a later date, as the license should be pre-installed along with XP.

You have a license - you should have an official Microsoft.Windows XP sticker on the laptop with the product key.

Look on the bottom of it.

Or else the product key came with the documentation.

All computers come with MS and all you have to do is fill in your name in the spaces and then you will be registered. The program will tell you where to do this. Look at the books that came with your computer. You have already paid for the use of it when you bought the computer. Good Luck.
