Few things you got to consider.

A) Do you want to make writing a career, or do you simply want the satisfaction of publishing a book?

B) Do you care if only 200 people read your book?

C) Would you rather pay money to have a few people be able to read your book, or would you rather work longer and harder on it so you could get money by people who want to read your book?

If you want a career out of it, you'll need to, in the first place, write a good book! That is absolutely the most important thing! After that, I would suggest, if you want to be a professional, send it to two or even three professional editors just to get all the errors out of it. Then find a literary agent; either google it or look up the book "The Writer's Market". The agent will help you find the right publisher and negotiate a contract and take care of most of the details. Then you just need to arrange book signings and any interviews you can, whether just for a local paper or a regional radio station.

If you just want the satisfaction of publishing a book, just type "Self Publishing" in google and you'll see a couple hundred publishers. You may end up spending about 1000 bucks though, and sell only 100 copies or so. But at least your book would be published, even if it kind of sucks.

Truth is, getting published is a pain. But if you're determined you can accomplish it. Don't listen to Kitty, whoever that is is way too jaded. Self publishing is fine, and not "junk" as stated. You can self publish a good book yourself, sell it online and make good money without a publisher. Most local bookstores will still hold signings for you even if you are self published. Contact the local media and let them know you wrote a book. They WILL do a story on you. If you get listed on Amazon like I did, Bookstores usually will buy x amount of copies for your signing if you tell them how many people to expect.
If not, as an author you can buy them yourself and bring to the signing. Eventually once you gain mometum more stores will carry your book if its in demand. With the internet the days of big publishers being the only game in town is long over.
How do I know? I'm a self published author, and I make a good living at it, and recently turned down an offer from a big publisher after landing the cover of a local entertainment magazine. Anything is possible if you work very hard and are willing to promote yourself. Most authors wont, because they are shy and don't know how .

Trial"
There are many publishers out there and believe me, it is hard to find one. I spent two years and many, many manuscripts sent with only three replies to the negative. One took three years to reply? Just type in (Canadian) USA Literary Agency's and try some of these.
I went the self publish route. Very hard row to hoe. It worked for me only because I am retired and had time to do many book signings.
I write this mainly to warn you about the bad guys out there trying to take your money for nothing. Check (Warning &Cautions for Writers) May save you some headaches.

This question must be asked 6,000 times a day on this site. Legitimate publishing (not the on line vanity garbage where you pay to have your book published) is VERY difficult to get into, and most publishers no longer read unsolicited manuscripts. Same with getting an agent. They take only a few clients and then only the best of the best who have the next blockbuster. Less than 1% of all manuscripts submitted ever get published and most are returned unread with a rejection letter. You need to have a lot of writing experience to have a book published (or even to write one), know all about the effective query letter, outlines, and how to write a good synopsis. And even then your chances are slim. Why everyone wants to have a book published is beyond me and the truth is, the vast majority never will. As you can tell by the first answer here form Mo, most people have no clue as to what they are talking about on this site, especially when it comes to this field. In addition, forget Writer's Market. Every year they publish that thing and it contains thousands of listings of publishers who DO NOT accept unsolicited manusccripts, especially from amateurs. The book is virtually worthless in my opinion. Please do not listen to the poster who tells you HE was published by some cheesy on lin esite, because HE PAID to have it done! Believe me, please, that is called vanity publishing and it appeals to YOUR VANITY and EGO. It obviously appealed to his. When you publish this way you pay, end up with a bunch of books that no one will want, and you end up giving them as gifts to friends and relatives. If that's what you want, fine, but fon't listen to those who haven't a clue (and I mean A CLUE) as to what they are babbling on about. I have been in this business for a long time, believe me, and I know what I am talking about! No one makes a good living self-publishing, trust me. This guy is full of bull, especially when he says he recentlly turned down a big publisher. It didn't happen!
