In 1681, the current King of England granted a land charter to William Penn for the debt repayment he owed Penn's father. Penn traveled to that area along with several other Quakers to keep away from the religious persecution against them. They called the land Pennsylvania after Penn.
On Dec. 12, 1787, Pennsylvania became the 2nd state to ratify the Constitution, thus gaining statehood.
