well, i own a repair shop, and your not hurting it by letting it warm up like this ,i always let mine set for at least 5 minutes before taking off in it,especially if its cold,in the spring and summer i wait at least a minute to let all the fluids circulate ,but always in the winter i let mine warm at least 5 minutes, and now with these real cold temperatures we all have had its a good idea to let one warm up,good luck i hope this help,s.

Today if your using the proper engine oil 5w30 it's perfectly OK to start it and go. Believe it or not it's more important to heat the engine oil and water / coolant as quickly as possible. Using somewhat slower accelerating speeds to the posted speed limit is a good warm up practice. Slower inital town driving is best. When you see the temperature comming off the cold mark it's time to go! If the motor is allowed to warm untill the engine hit's the normal temperature range before you move you're creating a great deal of condensation inside of the crankace and waisting gasoline. It takes longer to get rid if this moisture. Sooner or later gum, varnish and sludge will form in your crankace particularly if you have the Northstar all aluminum engine. It has a 6 qt. oil pan (longer to warm up) and the aluminum motor does not store engine heat as well as a cast iron block motor. Heat gets rid of water and condensation.

I live in a state where it is very cold, I leave my car warm up about the same time as you do. It depends on how cold it is outside. If you live where it is warm, all you have to do is warm it up a couple of minutes.

5 min. is fine. it gives the fluids a chance to warm up and get some heat to the driver, On these cold New England mornings I start my car, walk the dog and go, the heat starts almost right away. My dog and I are more comfortable.

I always wait until the pointer on the thermometer goes beyond the "C" and reaches the first line. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
